When Central Coast homes do not have proper gutters, water can damage foundations, erode landscaping, and rot fascia boards. RoofTop Company installs seamless gutter systems built for coastal fog, winter storms, and seasonal runoff. Our crews serve homeowners throughout San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County.

Whether you are building new construction or adding gutters to an older home, we size and install a gutter installation system that helps protect your property year after year.

Last winter, a homeowner in Arroyo Grande called us after noticing water pooling near their foundation. Their home had no gutters. Rain was pouring off the roof and splashing against the siding. The fascia boards were starting to soften in spots. We installed a full gutter system with properly placed downspouts and discharge extensions. The next storm hit, and the water flowed where it should, away from the house.

    Why Proper Gutter Installation Matters

Gutters seem simple, but poor installation creates expensive problems. When gutters overflow, sag, or leak, water finds its way into places it should not be.

Foundation issues can start when water repeatedly pools around the home's base. Fascia and soffit rot can happen when water runs behind the gutter or overflows onto wood trim. Siding stains show up when water streaks down walls again and again. Landscaping erosion can happen fast during winter storms when roof runoff hits the ground in the same spot.

Coastal conditions make installation details even more important. Salt air can accelerate corrosion on certain metals. Fog can keep surfaces damp longer. Steeper roof pitches common in this area can increase water volume during storms.

That is why we focus on sizing, pitch, hangers, outlets, and downspouts as a system, not just a quick install.

    How We Size Gutters

Most homes use 5-inch gutters. Some need 6-inch. The difference matters.

5-inch gutters work well for many roof areas with moderate pitch. They handle typical rainfall patterns for most residential properties.

6-inch gutters can make sense when your roof is steep, your roof area is large, or you have heavy concentrated runoff near valleys and long runs. Steep roofs shed water faster. Larger roof sections collect more volume. If downspouts cannot keep up during storms, a larger system can help reduce overflow.

We measure your roofline and recommend what fits your home. Undersized gutters overflow. Oversized gutters can look bulky and add cost without adding real benefit.

    Installation Process

Every gutter installation follows a clear process. Skipping steps leads to problems later.

Step 1: Site inspection and measurement

We walk the roofline and check fascia condition. We measure for exact gutter length and map downspout locations. You get a written estimate before work starts.

Step 2: Fascia repair if needed

Damaged or rotted fascia should be addressed first. Gutters need solid attachment points. If fascia repair is needed, we outline it clearly.

Step 3: Drip edge review and installation (if needed)

Drip edge helps protect roof edges and guides water into gutters. If it is missing or damaged, we can install or replace it as part of the project.

    Step 4: Seamless gutter fabrication

For aluminum gutters, we can bring equipment to form gutters to exact lengths. Fewer seams usually means fewer leak points.

Step 5: Hanger installation and pitch

We secure gutters with hangers spaced correctly for strength. Gutters must pitch toward downspouts. Too flat and water sits. Too steep and flow can be inconsistent.

Step 6: Downspout placement and outlets

Downspouts go where water needs to drain. We install outlets, attach downspouts, and add elbows to direct water away from the foundation.

    Step 7: Discharge planning

Downspouts often need extensions, splash blocks, or drainage routing to move water away from the home, not right next to it.

    Step 8: Testing and cleanup

We run water through the system, confirm flow, and check corners and outlets. We clean up debris and leave the site tidy.

    Materials and Styles

We install gutter options that work well on the Central Coast.

    Seamless aluminum gutters

are a common choice. They do not rust like steel and are available in many colors. With maintenance, they can last for decades.

    Copper gutters

are a premium option. They develop a natural patina and can last a long time. Copper is often chosen for aesthetic reasons on higher-end or historic homes.

    Steel gutters

can be used in certain applications, especially where extra strength is needed. Near the coast, coated or treated options are important to help reduce corrosion risk.

    K-style gutters

are common on modern homes and hold more water than half-round profiles.

    Half-round gutters

have a traditional look and can be a good fit for specific architectural styles.

We recommend what fits your roofline, runoff needs, and the look you want.

    Fascia Repair

Fascia boards run along your roofline behind the gutters. They are often wood. When they rot, gutters cannot attach properly.

Signs of fascia damage include soft spots, visible rot, peeling paint, water stains, or gutters pulling away from the home. If there is daylight between the gutter and fascia, something is off.

We check fascia condition during every estimate. If boards need repair or replacement, we outline it clearly before installing gutters. Installing new gutters over compromised fascia usually leads to early sagging or failure.

    Downspout Repair

Downspouts carry water from gutters to the ground. When they fail, gutters overflow or water dumps in the wrong place.

Common downspout problems include clogs, detachment, dents, corrosion, poor placement, and missing extensions. A downspout that empties right next to the foundation defeats the purpose of having gutters.

During installation, we assess downspout placement and condition. If existing downspouts are damaged or poorly located, we recommend replacement or re-routing so water discharges safely.

    Gutter Replacement

If your home already has gutters but they are failing, replacement may make more sense than patching.

Replacement is often the better option when gutters are sagging, leaking in multiple areas, rusted through, pulling away from fascia, or undersized for the roof. Patching can be short-term if the system is near end-of-life.

Replacement follows the same process as installation, with removal and disposal of the old system first. We inspect fascia and roof edges before installing the new gutters.

    Gutter Guards

Gutter guards can reduce how often you need to clean gutters. They help keep leaves, pine needles, and debris out while letting water through.

Common types include mesh screens, surface-tension designs, and foam inserts. Mesh works well for many homes. Surface-tension systems can help in heavy leaf zones. Foam can be lower cost but often needs replacement.

Guards help, but they are not maintenance-free. Smaller debris can still collect, and the guards may need occasional cleaning. Homes with heavy tree coverage benefit the most.

    Gutter Cleaning

Even new gutters need maintenance. Debris builds up over time and clogs cause overflow.

How often to clean depends on tree coverage. Homes with overhanging branches may need cleaning twice a year. Homes with minimal trees may need it less often. After major storms, a quick visual check can catch clogs early.

We offer gutter cleaning as a service if you prefer not to climb ladders or deal with the mess.
